During a Cultural Forum on the Sidelines of the Conference on New Media and Its Role in Community Security and Economic Development, Al-Dulaimi Warns of the Risks of News Manipulation and Calls for Purposeful TV Programs
Dr. Abdul-Razzaq Al-Dulaimi, former Dean of the College of Media at the University of Baghdad, warned about the dangers of news manipulation during the cultural forum organized by Dr. Zainab Al-Khafaji in collaboration with Reza Alwan Café in Iraq. The forum, held via Google Meet, emphasized the need for purposeful television programs and discussed media and media discourse in both Arab and Western contexts.
The forum was attended by a distinguished group of media professors from Arab universities and various journalists and media professionals from several Arab institutions.
Al-Dulaimi reviewed the objectives of the “New Media” conference and the key messages it aims to deliver to the Arab community, given the significant role of media in political, social, and linguistic fields.
He expressed satisfaction with the 60 research summaries submitted to his committee, describing their topics as “new, important, and relevant to media studies and psychological warfare.” Al-Dulaimi noted that the research contributions came from a broad academic base, which offers hope for actionable outcomes from the conference.
He highlighted the crucial role of media through social media platforms, noting that news is accessible to all segments of society. He warned about the dangers of news manipulation in ongoing wars and events to align with each media outlet’s agenda.
Regarding achieving popularity and viewership for television programs, Al-Dulaimi urged those responsible for TV programs to develop strategic studies that are deep and serious, avoiding the pitfalls of speed and randomness.
The Head of the Media Committee emphasized the importance of carefully considering the format, timing, and target audience of TV programs.
Al-Dulaimi also discussed the differences between advertising and promotion on Arab and international channels and the use of global films to promote certain ideas or stir issues to distract from essential matters.
He pointed out the positives and negatives resulting from the proliferation of television channels, both Arab and international, and how they attract viewers with substandard content. He called for raising the level of media discourse to ensure the safety and stability of Arab societies.
The Union of Afro-Asia Universities, in collaboration with strategic partners, will launch a series of international scientific conferences by the end of this year, starting with the conference on “New Media and Its Role in Enhancing Community Security and Economic Development” scheduled to be held in Morocco.
Dr. Magda Mahmoud, Head of the Media Committee for the conference, praised Dr. Abdul-Razzaq Al-Dulaimi’s renowned scientific contributions in reviewing and approving research summaries according to established research standards.
Dr. Magda also thanked the cultural forum, Dr. Zainab Al-Khafaji, and Reza Alwan Café in Iraq for their role in enriching the Arab space with in-depth discussions on media and cultural topics.
