The Union of Afro-Asia Universities extends its sincere congratulations and best wishes to Sheikh Professor Hassan Shafie, Member of the Senior Scholars of Al-Azhar, President of the Union of Arabic Scientific Academies, and Member of the Council of Muslim Elders, on receiving the King Faisal International Prize for Service to Islam for the year 2022.

This prestigious award recognizes the distinguished scholar’s extensive scientific contributions and his efforts in serving Islam and the Arabic language. It acknowledges his significant work over a long career filled with knowledge, dedication, and contributions in various fields, including the service of students of knowledge.

Born on December 19, 1930, in Beni Suef Governorate, Dr. Hassan Shafie earned his bachelor’s degree in Arabic Language and Islamic Sciences from the Faculty of Dar Al-Uloom, Cairo University, in 1963. He then obtained his advanced degree in Creed and Philosophy from the Faculty of Usuluddin, Al-Azhar University, in the same year, and his Ph.D. in Islamic Philosophy from the University of London in 1977. He has held various scientific and administrative positions at Dar Al-Uloom, Al-Azhar University, and other Arab and Islamic universities. He has also been a member of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, the Arabic Language Academy, and the Islamic Research Academy. He was a member of the Senior Scholars Committee when it was re-established in 2012 and a member of the Council of Muslim Elders.

The King Faisal International Prize aims to honor distinguished scholars and pioneers without discrimination based on ideology or race. It celebrates the values of Islamic civilization, which promotes excellence in science, respect for scholars, and appreciation of culture and civility. The winners in the five categories of the prize—Islamic Studies, Arabic Language and Literature, Medicine, Science, and Service to Islam—are selected by scientific institutions, councils, universities, and research centers.
